After gaining a degree in Law, I started my career in the City of London specialising in private client taxation, before working in a number of larger international firms gaining experience in the taxation of large multi-national companies, corporate restructuring and international tax. I then moved into a senior position locally dealing with all aspects of UK taxation before joining Humphrey & Co in 2011. I am a Chartered Tax Adviser (CTA) and as well as heading up the tax department at Humphrey & Co providing technical advice on all aspects of UK direct taxation and VAT, I am also a qualified US tax practitioner (being authorised to represent taxpayers before the Internal Revenue Service as an Enrolled Agent).

    Mike Bryan

    I joined Humphrey & Co in 2014 after graduating in Accounting and Finance in 2010 and completing a 3 year training contract elsewhere. I assist businesses with a holistic approach to accountancy and taxation.

    I enjoy the variety of my work and I have a portfolio containing a vast range of industries, from start-ups to long established companies. I have worked within the healthcare sector throughout my career and I have expert knowledge and experience in this industry. Although I am a general accountant, I act for a plethora of doctors, dentists, care home owners and other healthcare businesses.

    I regularly assist with the buying or selling of businesses. I find this work intriguing, meticulous and extremely self-rewarding. I also enjoy implementing cloud based accounting software to streamline accounting functions and offer cost efficiencies in this area.

    I lecture and present seminars on accountancy and taxation to healthcare professionals and I have provided healthcare updates to some of the leading UK banks.

    I joined Humphrey & Co in 2010 and qualified as a Chartered Accountant and Chartered Tax Adviser in 2011 and 2017 respectively. I am based in the Eastbourne office and act for a broad range of clients located in different areas of the UK.

    I take a proactive approach to assisting clients to ensure they are best prepared to operate their business in the most tax efficient manner. I have a special interest in individuals and corporate bodies associated with the Lloyd’s of London insurance market and provide a number of specialist services including auditing, valuations and tax advisory and compliance. Due to the evolving legislation relating to property taxes, I have also gained a specialist interest in advising clients on property transactions, including property investors and developers.

      Michael Macefield

      After gaining a degree in engineering I worked in industry for a couple of years. I then joined Humphrey & Co in 1986 as a trainee chartered accountant. I qualified in 1988 and became a partner in 1997. I manage a varied portfolio of clients including those in the Lloyd's insurance market and engineering sectors. I specialise in audit and corporate reporting, general tax work and VAT.

        I joined Humphrey & Co in 2004 having completed a degree in Physics and Mathematics at Keele University. I qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 2008. I enjoy acting for a wide range of businesses from sole traders to large companies. I have an interest in legal sector clients with a particular specialism in the tax affairs of Barristers.

          I graduated from London in 2000 with an honours degree in Accounting and Business Finance. I joined Humphrey & Co in the same year. I qualified as a Chartered Certified Accountant in 2003 and obtained the status of Fellow in 2008. I am located in the Eastbourne office. My focus is on individual taxation and I specialise in acting for healthcare professionals, particularly dentists. I have a broad range of experience assisting clients to start their business, obtain finance for growth, tender for contracts and the purchase and sale of businesses throughout the UK. I regularly lecture on taxation around the country.

          • What do you like most about your job? Being able to provide useful advice to people and their businesses when they most need it. It gives me great satisfaction. The people who help me do this aren't too bad either!

            Sue Pocklington

            I joined Humphrey & Co in 2007. I am qualified as both a Chartered Tax Adviser and Trust and Estate Practitioner. I also passed The Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP) Advanced Certificate in Will Preparation. I oversee our Trust & Estate Support Services team and, as we are now licensed as a probate firm by the ICAEW, I am also the Head of Legal Services and one of the firm’s Authorised Individuals for probate work. I specialise in personal tax planning, including inheritance tax, wills and lasting powers of attorney. I advise and assist both individuals and other professionals in all aspects of Trust and Estate administration.

            • What do you like most about your job? I love the interaction with clients and contacts, learning how they have got to where they are and seeing how I can help and support them.

            I joined Humphrey & Co in 1983 after graduating from Leeds University with a degree in Modern Languages. I qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1986 and became a partner in 1989. I am based in the Eastbourne office but a good proportion of my clients are based in London and other parts of the UK. I have a special interest in insurance related businesses with particular emphasis on individuals and corporate bodies associated with the Lloyd's of London insurance market

              I joined Humphrey & Co in August 1999, after graduating from the University of Wales in Swansea. I completed my professional studies with Humphrey & Co and qualified as a Chartered Accountant in July 2002. I am based in the Hove office and assist small and medium sized businesses with their accountancy and taxation affairs. I am part of the specialist Dental Team and have interests in the construction industry and personal taxation areas. I prepare the annual dental statistics report on behalf of NASDAL each year

                I joined Humphrey & Co in 1997 having completed an engineering Masters degree at Cambridge University the year before. I qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 2000 and, after two years working in the Aerospace industry, returned to the firm and became a partner in 2006. I am based in Eastbourne with the majority of my clients spread across East and West Sussex. My client base is extremely diverse with start ups through to international corporate entities. In my spare time (or what's left of it from having 3 young children), I particularly enjoy scaring myself sailing my RS dinghy in nearby Pevensey Bay!

                      I have been with Humphrey & Co since 1997 and have seen it quickly grow and keep pace with the constant changes in technology. I assist in helping a mixed portfolio of clients, from start-ups to LLP's and well established family run companies. I have a good knowledge of personal taxation, VAT and have payroll experience. In 2015 I became Xero-certified enabling me to help our growing client base who use this excellent software. When I'm not following my favorite football team, my spare time is filled with the frustrations of finding a reasonable standard of golf.

                              I joined Humphrey & Co in 2022 after working for a firm of solicitors for over 20 years, initially as a Conveyancing Manager and then in the Private Client Department. I specialised in Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPA) & Court of Protection Deputyship cases, to include creation/application to the Court and ongoing management of clients’ property & financial affairs and health & welfare matters. 

                              I qualified to become an Associate Member of the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives.

                              Joining Humphrey & Co has enabled me to bring my existing skills and experience to support the growth of LPA & Deputyship work within the TESS Team and also expand my knowledge and skills in preparing Wills and dealing with Trust & Estate matters.

                              I am a member of STEP and have completed the STEP Certificate in Trusts & Estates and the STEP Advanced Certificate in Administration of Estates – England & Wales.  I am continuing with the STEP Diploma in order to become a Trust & Estate Practitioner.

I am directly involved in the majority of audits within the firm and undertake Solicitors Accounts Rules compliance work. In my spare time, I am treasurer of a local cricket club and vice-chairman of a local motor sport club.

In 2015 I became Xero-certified, which allows me to assist clients with their bookkeeping on easy-to-use software. Outside of work, I help at a local trampoline club and I attend regular dance classes.

Trust and Estate work feels personal and has its own set of challenges. This makes my work enjoyable and very rewarding. In my spare time I love live music events, hiking and mountain biking.

                                                                          I went to college and studied motor vehicle repair work. I passed all of my exams and worked as a mechanic for a while. During this time, computers in cars were becoming the norm and they were quickly becoming more complicated. I found that I was able to deal with car, computer related problems easier than some others and it caught my interest. I took various computer examinations and then worked for Lombard bank where I would process financial and land registry information via computers and maintain the backup systems. From the bank, I moved to the motor insurance industry. I took, and passed, my Chartered Insurance Institute examinations and my roles were primarily based around computers. I created automated applications to improve efficiency and worked together with the IT department. 7 years later, I moved my employment to Humphrey & Co.

                                                                                                                              I joined Humphrey & Co as an apprentice in 2017 having completed my studies in accounting, law and business at Sussex Downs College, Eastbourne. In 2020 I completed my AAT studies to becoming a qualified Accounting Technician. I then went on to achieve my ACA qualification to become a Chartered Accountant in October 2023.  I work for partner Karen Wicks as part of the dental and medical team. Outside of work, I enjoy relaxing, spending time with my friends and family, going out and socialising.

                                                                                                                                I previously worked in a multimedia production company organising events and exhibitions. I then took time off to have my son and joined Humphrey & Co in September 2014 assisting with varied tasks in the Marketing Department. My role has recently developed to managing the marketing of the firm and assisting Kate Manser, Practice Manager, with a variety of internal practice procedures.

                                                                                                                                    I joined the firm in November 2021 as part of the Xero team, after being a self employed bookkeeper for 14 years. I enjoy being part of the team and hope to progress my career here.
                                                                                                                                    I have two teenage daughters who keep me busy and in my spare time I enjoy weightlifting, pole fitness, gymnastics and callisthenics. When I’m not so active you can usually find me socialising with friends.

I have worked within accountancy practices since late 2012 and have many years’ experience in payroll.

I am based in the Hove office where I work for partner Mike Bryan as part of the dental team. Outside of work I enjoy taking my dog for walks, metal detecting and doing jigsaw puzzles.

Before joining the firm, I worked in a variety of industries in similar admin focused roles. I also have a Bachelor's degree in Fashion Communication with Business studies.

In my spare time, I love to watch and compete in motorsport which I have done since I was very young.

                                                                                                                                                I have many years of payroll experience working in both the public and private sectors. This includes several NHS hospitals and government departments as well as busy payroll bureaux for other accountancy practices. I qualified with the Chartered Institute of Payroll Professionals (CIPP) in 2002. I joined Humphrey & Co in 2013 where I look after the day to day payroll administration for an interesting and varied client base.

                                                                                                                                                    I joined Humphrey and Co in January 2018 after relocating to the local area. I've worked in a few practices and came to the conclusion I enjoy bookkeeping and management accounts the most. I've used various software packages over the years but my favourite by far is Xero. I've taught a varied range of clients how to use Xero and improve their processing systems. Bookkeeping has changed in recent years and it’s exciting to see how new software is developing to meet this change, freeing up us bookkeepers to add more value than ever before.
